Scaling and Cleaning Dentistry
Do your gums bleed while brushing or flossing?
Healthy gums should not bleed when Brushing or flossing or during any regular dental hygine procedures at home. Bleeding gums is a sign of gum inflammation and certianly a biginning of gum disease. Gum disease is a preventable disease in most cases with a proper oral hygine and regular six monthly visits to your dentist for check up and removal of stubborn plaque and tartar deposits. Dental scaling and polishing are essential procedures in maintaining oral health and hygiene. The main goal of scaling is to remove plaque and tartar (calculus) buildup from the surfaces of the teeth, especially below the gum line.
Dental Scaling and Cleaning Process
In order to avoid cavities, gum disease, and other dental issues, scale and clean of the teeth is a standard dental procedure that involves removing plaque and tartar.
This procedure is recommended at least twice a year for most patients.
- First, we start by inspecting your teeth and gums with a small mirror, checking for signs of decay gum disease or any other dental issues. Then, we use a metal scaler to carefully remove plaque and tartar from your teeth. Plaque is a soft, sticky layer of bacteria that builds up and can lead to cavities and gum problems, while tartar is a hardened deposit that only a dentist can remove.
- Second, we use powerful electric brush and gritty toothpaste to polish the teeth and remove any remaining stains or plaque after scaling. To clear away any plaque or debris that may have built up in those hard-to-reach areas, we also floss between the teeth.
- Once the tooth scaling and cleaning is complete, we apply a fluoride treatment to the teeth. Fluoride is a mineral that can help strengthen the tooth enamel and prevent cavities.
Frequency of Dental Scaling
A dentist or dental hygienist uses specialized instruments (manual or ultrasonic scalers) to scrape away deposits. It can help prevent gum disease, cavities, and bad breath.
Frequency: Typically recommended every six months, but may vary based on individual dental health.
Dental PolishingPurpose: Following scaling, polishing smooths the tooth surfaces and helps remove any remaining plaque or stains
A rubber cup or brush is used with a polishing paste to buff the teeth. This process not only enhances the aesthetic appearance of the teeth but also makes it harder for plaque to accumulate.
Frequency: Often performed after scaling during routine cleanings.
Benefits of regular dental scaling.
Reduces the risk of gum disease and cavities.
Improves overall oral hygiene.
Elimination of bad breath or halitosis.
Enhances the appearance of teeth, making them look cleaner and brighter.
Some patients may experience temporary sensitivity after these procedures. this is becuse the false barrier formed by the tartar on your teeth gets removed during sclaing and now all the cold water, air and foods come in direct contact with clean tooth surface. This sensitivity is tempoary and as you brush your teeth regularly with toothpaste, sensitvity reduces and then disappears. Tartar inflames gums and gums shrink over time if plaque is allowed to grow unchecked, and eventually very sensitive root surface gets exposed with gums recession. Gums are very didfficult to grow back which is the reason why it is highly recommeded to prevent any gum disease, before it advances.
Gum bleeding during pregnancy: Due to hormonal changes gums respond to presence of plaque more aggressively, and bleed more than usual while brushing. In some cases pregnant women can experience gums swelling as well. Having clean teeth and professional dental cleaning is highly recommeded before or during pregnancy. With all plaque and tartar removed and adequate home dental hygine, all issues related to gums can be kept under control during pregnancy which also helps with long term gingival health of the mother. It's important to maintain regular dental visits for effective oral care.
