Root Canal
A root canal dentist conducts this procedure when the internal pulp of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected. Root canal problems can cause severe pain and swelling surrounding the tooth because the tooth nerve lies within the root canal inside the tooth.
What is a Root Canal?
- The nerve or pulp may infected due to tooth decay, a crack, chip, excessive fillings, or trauma. These allow bacteria to enter the inner pulp, causing infection. Endodontic or root canal treatment can be conducted to salvage the tooth. Root canal therapy removes the internal pulp (including the nerve and infecting bacteria) to get rid of the infection.
- Signs You May Need Root Canal Therapy
- If you are suffering from the following symptoms, call Gaven Dental Care as soon as possible to schedule an appointment:
- Severe toothache
- Sensitiveness to hot or cold foods or drinks
- A change in colour of the tooth
- Inflammation of the gums surrounding the painful tooth
- A painful ulcer on the gum that is recurring
Root canal treatment procedure:
Step 1: An X-ray is taken to assess the case's severity and the canal's individual shape.
Step 2: A rubber dam is placed over the damaged tooth to isolate it from saliva and bacteria. From here, your dentist will create a small opening in the tooth to access the pulp. All pulp tissue is removed through this opening. This procedure shouldn’t hurt as the nerve is dead. Water and an antibacterial flush are used to ensure no trace of bacteria is left inside the tooth. After thoroughly cleaning the tooth, the canal and small opening are sealed with a temporary filling.
Step 3: At the second appointment, a permanent sealing paste is used to fill the canal and access hole, and a filling is placed. Sometimes, a significant amount of pulp is removed through the root canal treatment. If this is the case, you will be fitted with a dental crown—a tooth-coloured cap that sits over the damaged tooth to add strength and protect it from further damage.

If the root canal is successful, it can cause mild pain for a few days. This is temporary and should go away independently as long as you practice proper oral hygiene. If the pain stays over three days, you should see your dentist for a follow-up.
An option for a root canal is a tooth extraction, in which your dentist can replace a damaged tooth with a bridge, partial denture, or implant. This can be a costly treatment and usually requires several doctor visits.
If you’re a candidate for a root canal, you’ll likely encounter less pain over time. According to the American Association of Endodontists, you’re six times more likely to be pain-free than a person who decides not to have a root canal.
